The history of this brand stems from Prohibition. In 1900, the US placed a huge order for brandy in Portugal. Years passed, and no operator wanted to take the risk until the century-old Portuguese company Carvalho, Ribeiro & Ferreira decided to put forward a proposal and joined forces in a highly innovative production facility in Portugal, with semi-automatic production. Together with the American client, after long discussions, they decided on the name of the product: Kaiser. Production began, and all the bottles were shipped to their destination. Shortly thereafter, the 1920 Prohibition era began, and many of them were returned to Portugal. This was the birth of Prohibition. The bottles were not returned to the United States, and the company decided to change its name to 1920 in honor of this peculiar beginning, in order to launch a brand from scratch with the same quality profile. 1920 gained enormous prominence in European countries due to its quality, becoming one of the best-selling brandies in Portugal. It's the perfect respite for many Portuguese.
