A PORT FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS PORT WINES & THE RABELO BOAT THE BRAVE ONE OF THE DOURO Smooth, complex, aromatic, liqueur-like, iconic. What does Port wine taste like? It tastes of conquering the Douro River, once turbulent, unpredictable and stormy, navigable only by small marvels of Portuguese naval architecture. The rabelo boats transported, in a pre-road and pre-train era, barrels of Port wine between the most remote estates of the Douro Valley and the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, where the wine would age with time and soul to then be appreciated by the whole world. Port wine, therefore, tastes of that bravery, and we believe that its typical hint of sweetness is there to remind us of the hundreds of sailors who, with words of faith, risked everything, embarked and arrived safely in port. Feel honored to be part of this great story, knowing that every time you drink a Port, you contribute to the future of a unique heritage. A CURIOSITY about “Port Wine Day” and the “Designation of Origin”. Considering the frauds that jeopardized the reputation and quality of the wine, the Marquis of Pombal initiated several measures, including the creation of this “certificate” of origin and quality. Port Wine Day is celebrated on September 10th, as it was on that day, in 1756, that the first demarcated and regulated wine region in the world, the Alto Douro Vinhateiro, was born, an initiative of the Marquis of Pombal. Ruby or Tawny, there are always more reasons to toast.
