The story goes that the three daughters of a farmer hired to clear the Quinta do Casalinho estate gave this wine its name. They were Maria Aurora, Maria Isabel, and Maria Eduarda. The latter had worked since the founding of Caves Casalinho, and since there was a good rapport between the farmer and the landowner, the name was given in honor of her Three Marias.
